Gary Jeffries - Assistant Coach
Gary Jeffries joins the Gryphons for his first year with the program as an Assistant Coach in 2016. He joins the Gryphons following an illustrious coaching career in the CIS. Gary started coaching in 1973 at Laurier and was the Head Coach for the Women's Basketball team for six seasons and then the Men's Basketball for eight seasons before moving onto the Football team. He was with the Laurier Golden Hawks coaching staff for 35 years, including 10 seasons as Head Coach until he stepped down at the end of the 2012 season. He then spent one season as an Assistant Coach with the McMaster Marauders. Under his leadership the Golden Hawks football team won two OUA Championship titles (2005, 2004) and a CIS Vanier Cup title in 2004. He was named the OUA Football Coach of the Year on four occasions (2009, 2005, 2004, and 2003) and the CIS Coach of the Year in 2003.
Gary played football and hockey at the University of Guelph from 1967-1968 and was named Athlete of the Year in 1968. He played professional baseball in the Detroit Tigers system from 1966-1969 and also played football at Laurier from 1970-1972. He was drafted by the Toronto Argonauts in 1972 and then signed with the Hamilton Tiger Cats in 1973. In 2016 he was recently inducted into the Burlington Sports Hall of Fame. Gary is married to his wife Jill and has four children and seven grandchildren.
